My fondest memories as a child center around the Christmas season. I can still remember those times when we used to watch Mama make our Nativity scene out of cardboards and weave strings along the border where she can place colorful Christmas lights afterwards. It doesn’t look like much and we don’t even have a real Christmas tree back then but I cherished every minute watching her fill our home with so much creativity and joy. Now that I have my own child, nieces and nephews, I’d like to share the same experience with them and hopefully someday they will treasure these moments as much as I do today.
So as we count the days before Jesus’ birthday, I’m working on some DIY Christmas projects that I’ve been meaning to finish for a while and on top of my list is this five-pointed star ornament. This is an easy project but does require more hand control and patience because I used a cord rayon which is slightly harder than yarn. I also had to be careful not to ruin the glittery gold fiber in it which added texture to the project and made it lovely enough to be left bare. Certainly worth the effort!
MATERIALS:
• Hook: 3.5mm (E/4 US, UK 9) crochet hook
• Gold Cord Rayon approximately 34 yards. You can also used any yarn of your choice.
• Stitch marker
• Yarn needle
ABBREVIATION/STITCHES:
• Magic ring
• ch – chain
• sc – single crochet (US) / dc – double crochet (UK)
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• sl st – slip stitch
• inc – increase = two single crochet stitches in the same stitch
• dec – decrease = crochet two stitches together using the invisible decrease method
• [sc, inc] n times – repeat the pattern between parentheses n times.
• (N sts) – number of stitches in a round after finishing round.
If you need guide with the stitches, you can always check my post about Basic Crochet Techniques HERE.
NOTES:
– Finished star measures 5 inches. Any variations to hook size and cord/yarn/twine weight will result in a different sized star.
– Every separate piece will be worked in continuous rounds, do not join rounds with a slip stitch or chains unless otherwise stated.
– Mark the first stitch of each round by using a stitch marker or a piece of yarn.
POINTED PARTS (make 5):
Begin with a magic ring.
Round 1: sc 4
Round 2: inc 4 times (8 sts)
Round 3: [sc, inc] 4 times (12 sts)
Round 4: [sc 2, inc] 4 times (16 sts)
Round 5: sc around
Fasten off and leave a 1.5 inches tail except for the last piece.
You will be joining all pointed part pieces together and technically, this is the starting round in making the first surface.
Note: The last pointed part you made will now be labeled as the 1st pointed part .
Round 1: With your crochet hook in the last stitch of the 1st pointed part, join the 2nd pointed part by doing **one sc in the first stitch of last round of the 2nd pointed part, sc in each of the next 7 stitches. Repeat steps from ** to join the 3rd, 4th and 5th pointed parts.
To join 5th pointed part to the 1st pointed part, sc in the 9th stitch of the 1st pointed part then sc in the next 7 stitches. (40 sts)
Have a stitch marker ready now, place it in the first stitch of the next round.
Round 2: [sc 3, dec] 8 times (32 sts)
Round 3: [sc 2, dec] 8 times (24 sts)
Round 4: [sc 2, dec] 6 times (18 sts)
Round 5: [sc, dec] 6 times (12 sts)
Round 6: dec 6 times
Fasten off and leave an 8 inches long tail. Using a yarn needle, weave through the stitches of last round then pull tail gently to close opening.
From here you can make a string to hang the ornament. Insert the yarn needle going to the back/wrong side of your work, insert through the beginning magic ring of any pointed part then pull yarn tightly. Insert yarn needle again to the same ring then pull gently the tie loose tail to secure the string.
Turn your work to the other side.
Round 1: ch 1 in any corner, sc in the same stitch, sc in the next 39 sts (40 sts)
Round 2: [sc 3, dec] 8 times (32 sts)
Round 3: [sc 2, dec] 8 times (24 sts)
Round 4: [sc 2, dec] 6 times (18 sts)
Round 5: [sc, dec] 6 times (12 sts)
Round 6: dec 6 times
Fasten off and leave a long tail. Weave through the stitches of last round then pull tail gently to close opening, hide remaining yarn tail and you’re done!
You can add tiny decorations on it like bows and bells or make as many stars as you want then hang them around your Christmas tree. Let your creative spirit guide you this holiday season and don’t forget to have a wonderful time celebrating Jesus’ birthday with your whole family!
